How we approach the issues of life is just as important as what we say when we approach those very issues. Our body language and tone can sometimes “speak” a different message than the words that we choose to say. And our lack of intentionality towards things that we say matter can project that we in fact do not think those things matter. This is especially true when it comes to relationships. Whether it’s a romantic relationship, a friendship, or a family relationship, how we approach it matters. Here are five ways to approach relationships with intentionality:
1. Be Quick to Listen, Slow to Speak
In relationships, we should be quick to listen and slow to speak. Why? Because we are talking about our approach to relationships. Listening to the other person shows that you value their perspective and their thoughts. It also helps you to understand their needs and desires better, which can help you to build a stronger relationship.
2. Practice Prayer
The teaching team last fall mapped out this first part of 2024, and it started with prayer. Our posture of prayer would then help us as we spend a few weeks growing our understanding and practice of walking in Wisdom. Learning how to lead ourselves to be wise, and more like Jesus, in all that we do and speak. Prayer can help you to develop a deeper relationship with God, which can then help you to build stronger relationships with other people.
3. Seek Wisdom
Out of an overflow of wisdom, we glean and are challenged to be more like Jesus in his life, death, and resurrection. Seek wisdom in all areas of your life, including your relationships. This can help you to make better decisions, communicate more effectively, and build stronger relationships.
4. Embrace the Family of God
Sometimes when we think about “relationships” we only think about romance. Relationships are much more than romance and love interests. Its easy to overvalue the role of romantic connection and undervalue meaningful and deep connection with all kinds of people God brings into our life. All of the people in our faith community are what we mean when we say, “the family of God.” Embrace the family of God and spend time building relationships with them. They care about you, will be honest with you, and build you up.
5. Approach Relationships with Humility
Approach relationships with humility, recognizing that you don’t have all the answers and that you have room to grow. Be willing to learn from others and to admit when you’re wrong. This can help to build trust and respect in your relationships and can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections.
Relationships are an essential part of our lives. How we approach them matters. By being quick to listen, practicing prayer, seeking wisdom, embracing the family of God, and approaching relationships with humility, we can build stronger, more meaningful connections with the people in our lives.
