GOD IS LIGHT

The invitation to walk in the light isn’t just about moral purity—it’s about living authentically, in communion with God and others. When we walk in God’s light, we find that our lives are aligned with His truth, and we experience true fellowship with Him and with each other. It’s not about perfection, but about embracing His light in our lives, letting it guide us through the shadows of this world.

Work through the following questions and scriptures on your own or get together with your group, spiritual running partners, or family to talk through what you are learning.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

   1.  Name a person in your life (past or present) who was a nightlight of sorts in your darkest moment(s). Why were they so important to you?

   2. Talk about the culture in your home around darkness and light. Is there fear associated with it? Share an amusing anecdote, if you have one.

   3.  Read  1 John 1:3-10.

Make some observations about this passage (What does the text say?):

  • What stands out to you about this passage?
  • What do you notice and what are you curious about?
  • Did you notice the parallels in the way verse 6&7 were laid out before verse 8&9?

Make some interpretations (What does the passage mean?)

  • What do you learn about God in this passage? (Read and reference Genesis 1 for more about God’s nature)
  • What do we learn about ourselves in light of who God is?
  • How do you receive the strong language of being a liar?

Now make some applications (what’s my response?)

  • How are you encouraged, challenged, or convicted by this passage?
  • What is a true confession?
  • Are you truly in a place of regular confession?

KEY SCRIPTURE

We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our[a] joy complete. This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his  Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we   claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

PRAYER

Use I John 1:5-10 as an outline to pray:

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

Pray from verse 5 (for example) – “God there is no doubt that you are the origin of light, and that darkness is not in you…”

Read:

6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.

Pray from verse 6 (for example) – God we claim alot of things in this life, but may our words about you ring true…that we walk in your light, and NOT in darkness….

Keep this pattern going…maybe take turns praying

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

PRACTICE

  1. Practice telling on yourself.  If this is not a regular practice, take time each day to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal something you did or said that was not right.  Then you simply confess it out loud, and confess it to someone else. The heart behind this is to acknowledge and “turn” from that practice (repent).
  2. Take time to reflect.  We talked about the Golden Thread on Sunday, that God story that is interwoven in scripture.  Reflect this week on God’s Golden Thread in your life.  Where has God shown up, been there, even in times you couldn’t see or feel it.  This is more than just a moment, but moments/times layered on top of each other in a way only he could receive the credit.
