Baptism

We believe that baptism is the action a person takes after becoming a Christ Follower. We see this many times in scripture as people believed in Jesus Christ and were subsequently baptized. We see baptism as something done after making a clear decision to follow Jesus.

Considering Baptism?

Below are some prompting questions for you to consider what led you to the point of deciding to open your heart to Christ. Take time to thoroughly read and think through the passages. We encourage you to talk about your spiritual story with a Leader – but even if you only use this on your own, we hope this study will prove to be an invaluable exercise for you as you prepare for baptism.

After reading through the above, please fill out the form to be contacted about the next baptism opportunity! We'll contact you soon to see how we can help you along the journey. Steps are a little different for Kids, Students, and Adults. We look forward to celebrating with you!

Baptism FAQs

If you are interested in being baptized or have any questions about the process, please don't hesitate to reach out. We would be happy to help answer any questions you may have and provide more information about the significance of baptism.

At Gateway, we believe that choosing to get baptized is a spiritual milestone! We want to walk alongside you and equip you as you take this step. We have a baptism pathway that will give you tools to reflect and ask questions on your own and in community.

Before getting baptized, you will attend a baptism class (usually the Sunday before Baptism) and then have a one-on-one conversation with a staff member or leader so they can hear your story, celebrate where you are in your faith journey, and affirm your next step to go public with your faith through Baptism at your campus.

Please come ready to get wet. Men typically wear swim trunks and a shirt, while women usually wear a swimsuit with lightweight shorts and a T-shirt over the top.

Please invite friends and family to celebrate with you! Baptism at Gateway is a joyful event. Friends often bring balloons or banners, and we cheer for everybody loudly!

Please leave your keys/cell phone with a friend.

You do not need to bring your baptism self-study guide unless you have questions.

We will provide a baptism towel.

Gateway doesn’t actually have “membership”—we are happy to baptize anyone who has decided to trust Christ.

If you have a church home elsewhere, we encourage you to be baptized there and surrounded by your church family. However, you are also welcome to be baptized here.

If you’re in the Austin area, we encourage you to join us for one of our three Baptism Sundays throughout the year.

If you’re not in Austin, we encourage you to find a church near you and celebrate your Baptism with them. We can also try to connect you with a church or other Christ-followers in your area.

You can. Baptism is a celebration and a public declaration of your decision to follow Christ. The essential elements include your community of Christ-followers who have been part of your journey and water. We encourage you to involve one of our staff or a group leader so that we, as a church, can celebrate with you!

Yes, of course! Let us know your limitations, and we will work to accommodate a celebration for you.

Being baptized is something a person does after making a confession of faith ( Romans 10:9 - If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.) Therefore, each person getting baptized must go through the baptism pathway to prepare their heart for this spiritual milestone.

If a family member walks through the baptism pathway and the result is that they are ready to be baptized, then it may be possible to have them in the pool at the same time as you (check with the staff at your campus). It also may be true that your family and friends are not ready to make this decision at the same time that you are. No matter where they are in their faith journey, they can be there to celebrate you.

Yes we do! Here are a few:

Acts 8:12 — But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Acts 8:13 — Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.

Acts 18:8 — Crispus, the synagogue ruler, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard him believed and were baptized.

Acts 19:4-5 — Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
